Matchstick Puzzle
Pick up and place matchsticks in seven-segment numbers and operators until the equation becomes true. Easy, medium, and hard tiers grow from one-move puzzles to trickier three-move challenges.
Best for kids who like math riddles, spatial reasoning, and hands-on logic puzzles without a timer.
How to play Matchstick Puzzle
Each puzzle shows a math equation built out of seven-segment matchstick digits and operators — but the equation is wrong. Move exactly the allowed number of matchsticks (1, 2, or 3, depending on difficulty) from one place to another so the equation becomes true. Sticks can move between digits and operators, but you cannot add or remove sticks, only relocate them.
Easy puzzles need just one matchstick moved, medium need two, and hard puzzles need three — each move has to be planned since moving one stick can change a digit into a completely different number.
Why it builds thinking skills
Matchstick puzzles combine spatial reasoning with basic arithmetic: kids need to recognize how seven-segment digits change shape when a single line moves — a 3 becomes a 9, a 6 becomes an 8 — and check whether the resulting equation actually adds up.
Because every move is reversible and the puzzle allows undoing, kids can try a move, check the math, and try again — building the habit of testing an idea rather than getting it right on the first try.
Tips for parents and teachers
Start on easy (one-move) puzzles and have your child say out loud which digit or operator they are changing and why, before checking if the equation works.
It works well as a short math warm-up or brain-teaser break — no timer, no penalty for wrong tries, just moving sticks until the equation is true.
Common questions
How many matchsticks can you move?
Exactly 1 on easy, 2 on medium, or 3 on hard — no more and no fewer, and sticks can only be moved, not added or removed.
Is Matchstick Puzzle a good math game for kids?
Yes. It practices recognizing how digits change shape and checking whether an equation is true, which reinforces basic arithmetic and number sense in a hands-on, visual way.
