How to play Battleship
The computer hides a fleet of four ships — a four-space Carrier, a three-space Cruiser, a three-space Submarine, and a two-space Destroyer — somewhere on an 8x8 grid. Take turns firing one shot at a time by tapping a grid square. A hit turns red and a miss turns gray, and once every square of a ship is hit, that ship sinks. The first side to sink the entire enemy fleet wins.
Play against an easy computer that fires at random squares, or a hard computer that homes in and fires all around a ship the moment it lands a hit.
Why it builds thinking skills
Battleship is a deduction game played on a coordinate grid. Every hit and miss is a clue, and kids have to track that information across turns to narrow down where the rest of a ship must be — reading row and column position, and reasoning about which squares are still worth trying.
Because ships take up multiple squares in a straight line, a single hit usually means there is more ship nearby. Following up on a hit instead of firing randomly again is the core strategic skill the game teaches.
Tips for parents and teachers
Start with the easy computer so kids can get comfortable reading the grid and tracking hits and misses before facing an opponent that hunts them back.
After a hit, ask "where do you think the rest of the ship is?" — that question is the whole game, and saying the reasoning out loud reinforces it.
